Can I see a student's
Assignments Folder?
An instructor cannot see any individual student's Assignments
Folder but can see a view of a sample student Assignments Folder.
Go to Faculty Center and look for Gradebook/Preview Student
Assignments Folder. This preview shows the Assignments Folder list
as if you were a student and you had not submitted any assignments.
The instructor preview is Read-Only. Also, there is no way for the instructor
to see the assignments in the sample student's folder in other than "New"
status. ("New" means the student has not created, saved, or submitted the assignment.)
How do I locate
and access students' assignment submissions?
Assuming you have created the assignment as "Available in Students'
Assignment Folders," Click on Gradebook, then on the tab heading
of the assignment. For each student who has submitted the assignment,
there is a "View"
link that allows you to access and manage the assignment submission.
Why can't I find the assignment my student
says s/he posted?
-
If there is no View
link for the student's assignment in the Gradebook tab for the assignment,
select the Refresh/Reload option on the browser toolbar to
ensure that you are looking at the latest view of the class and the
Gradebook. (If the View
link then appears, consider resetting
your browser options to refresh pages automatically.)
-
If there still is no View
link for the student's assignment, it could be that the student has
only Saved the assignment rather than Submitted it.
When students create an assignment in WebTycho, they have options to
Save as Draft or Submit for Grading.
-
Drafts are "Saved" in the students'
Assignment Folders and that Status is indicated in their Assignments
Folders. Students can see, reaccess, and resave a draft as often
as desired. The instructor cannot see any SAVED
draft.
-
Submitted assignments appear in the students'
Assignments Folders with the Status Submitted (until marked
by the instructor as Read or Graded).
Ask the student to check the status of the assignment as it appears
in his/her Assignments Folder. If the status is "Saved," the
student has not actually submitted it, and it is not visible to the
instructor.
To submit the assignment, the student must first select the link for
the assignment in the Assignments Folder. In the next screen, s/he may
then either Submit for Grading directly, or select to Edit
Assignment and then Submit for Grading.
 |
If a student selects the "Edit Assignment"
option before submitting, it will NOT affect the
date of submission or modification noted on the assignment:
Submitted and Last Modified dates/times
will be identical.
If a student selects the "Edit Assignment" option
after submitting, the assignment will show different
dates/times for Submitted and Last Modified. |
|
- If you and/or your student continue to have difficulty finding the
assignment or its status, contact
WebTycho Support.
Can students
edit assignments after they submit for grading?
Yes. Assignments remain accessible
to students after they submit them for grading, either until an assigned
lockout date is reached or until the instructor marks the assignments
as "Read" or graded.
Why and how do I mark an assignment as "Read"?
Marking as assignment as Read has two major advantages:
-
It indicates to students that the instructor has "Received" their assignments, since they see the "Read" status for the assignment appear in their Assignments Folders. The instructor is thus relieved of sending/answering emails from concerned students.
-
If the instructor has chosen NOT to put a lock on the assignment, marking as Read will halt students' ability to edit submitted assignments.
To Mark As Read, Click on Gradebook/the Assignment Tab/View/Mark as Read.
It's a good idea to tell students that for you the "READ" status is a shorthand for "Assignment Received," not necessarily an indication of your having actually "read" it.
When you Mark assignments as Read, you may wish to also download assignment file attachments, to save having to do this separately. (Right-click on an attachment, select to Save [Link] Target As...)
How do I halt student
submissions after an assignment's due date?
There are two ways for instructors to "lock out" student submissions
of assignments after the due date:
- Universally/automatically:
When creating (or editing) the assignment, assign a "lockout"
date. As of 12:01 a.m. the morning of the day the lockout
goes into effect, no student will be able to submit an assignment for
grading. An error message will explain that the lockout is preventing
submission. See instructions
on Gradebook due dates & lock dates.
Considerations
A lockout date is not a good option for an assignment that different
students will submit at different times during the semester (although
editing the lockout date at each stage is a possibility).
BE SURE TO MAKE A LOCKOUT DATE EFFECTIVE THE DAY AFTER
THE ACTUAL DUE DATE, because it takes effect just after midnight on
the selected date. If the due date is April 4 and the lockout date
is also April 4, students will not be able to submit
on that date.
It's a good idea to inform students if you use the lockout feature.
- Individually/manually:
Shortly after the assignment due date/time, View each submitted
assignment and select to Mark As Read. This
effectively closes a student's ability to edit the assignment.
Considerations
You cannot prevent new submissions with this method; you can only
prevent students from editing assignments already submitted.
If you do NOT mark an assignment as Read and no lockout date has
passed, students can resubmit the assignment at will.
You must look at the creation date and the "last modified"
date of an assignment to determine if it was submitted in time, if
this is a concern.
How do students (re)submit
an assignment that is locked or marked as Read or has been graded?
-
If an assignment is locked and
you wish for a student to submit or resubmit an assignment, you must
first Edit the assignment to disable the lock.
- Go to Gradebook/Manage Assignments/Edit the item.
- In the Assignment form, select the NO radio button under the heading
"Do you want to lock this assignment on a certain date?"
and Submit.
 |
Disabling the lockout unlocks the assignments
of the entire class. The instructor may reengage the lock
at any time. |
|
- If an assignment is Marked as Read
(or has been graded), the student
cannot access it unless the instructor returns to "View" the
assignment and either selects to "Mark as Unread"
or to "Return to Student Ungraded."
Either option transfers the ability to edit the assignment to the student.
The Return to Student Ungraded option removes any grade and gives
the instructor an opportunity to permanently
note on the file the reason for the return.
Email the student to let him/her know the assignment has been "returned"
so that s/he can reaccess and resubmit it.
How do
I grade an assignment I "Returned to Student Ungraded"?
In order for an instructor to edit/(re)enter a
grade or attachment on an assignment that has been returned to a student,
-
the student must resubmit the assignment for grading, OR
-
the instructor can click to View the assignment and select
the option "Mark as Unread" and then again click to View
the assignment and select the option "Assign a Grade."
 |
There is one assignment form that trades back
and forth between "owners." An assignment's
"ownership" governs its editability; this
resides in one person at a time and trades back and forth
between student and instructor, even though both may be
able to read it.
-
Until the instructor marks an assignment as Read or Graded,
ownership and ability to edit resides with the student.
-
Once the instructor Marks it as Read or Assigns a Grade,
the instructor acquires ownership and ability to "edit."
-
When the instructor marks an assignment "Unread"
or "Return to Student Ungraded," ownership and
ability to edit reverts to the student.
- The instructor can control the "ownership" of
the assignment form via the functional buttons at the bottom
of each assignment in View mode.

How can I remove
or replace a file attachment I uploaded in error to a student's assignment
page?
Once you have uploaded a file as an attachment, it is available in Edit
mode in the assignment page, with a check box to mark it for deletion.
-
In the Gradebook, select to View the assignment again, then select to Edit Grade.
-
Scroll down to the bottom of the assignment page, for a section titled "Mark Attachments for Deletion." There, you should see an icon
for the student's original file and an icon for the file you attached, each with a blank checkbox to its left.
-
Click in the checkbox of the file you wish to delete (be sure it is the correct file!).
-
You can then scroll up to select another attachment to upload, if you wish.
-
Then submit. The file submitted in error will be deleted (and a new file, if selected for attachment, will be uploaded).
(If in Edit Grades view you do not see the file attachment you want to delete, right-click in the assignment form
and select to Reload/Refresh the frame/page. If it doesn't appear, wait a few minutes to accommodate replication between the WebTycho servers and try again.) |
