DE Oracle @ UMUC:       UNIX/Polaris-Related FAQs

Q: Why won't my file transfer program (FTP) connect me to my Polaris account? I can't upload my files.

A: If you use an FTP program to access Polaris, one day you may get no response at all when attempting to connect to Polaris, or you may receive a message like, "PASS (hidden) 530 login incorrect! login failure so quitting." This message could indicate that you have incorrectly typed your password, but it generally indicates that your Polaris password has expired.

  1. If you type your password as you attempt to connect to Polaris using your FTP program, make sure you don't have your keyboard caps lock on (Polaris passwords are case-sensitive) and that you are typing the password correctly.

  2. If you have your password checked/saved so that you can log into Polaris automatically in the FTP interface, and you have connected fine previously, you probably need to change the password (it expires every ~180 days). You must do this from within Polaris (telnet). Please see info.umuc.edu/de/ezine/faqs/UNIXfaq_chg_pw.htm for directions.

  3. After you change your Polaris password via telnet, provide the new password in your WS-FTP Session Properties/connect window.
