DE Oracle @ UMUC:       WebTycho-Related FAQs

Q:Why is there so much confusing code in my pasted HTML?

"I converted a Word 2000 document to webpage/HTML. I then viewed the page source and copied and pasted the HTML into my WebTycho text box. Now want to edit it a little, but there is so much extra code that it is very difficult to find the spot I want to edit."

A:Word 2000 generates XML and a lot of Microsoft "round-trip" codes when it converts documents to HTML. These sometimes make it very difficult to locate text to edit it within what you have pasted into WebTycho. It also makes the document larger, which can increase loading time and also affect how much text you can put in the WebTycho text box. Microsoft has designed an easy to download, easy to use "HTML filter" that can help you clean up the extraneous codes when you convert a Word document to HTML. See http://office.microsoft.com/downloads/2000/Msohtmf2.aspx or http://office.microsoft.com/Assistance/2000/htmlfilter.aspx.

Once you have downloaded the HTML Filter follow the instructions at: http://info.umuc.edu/de/ezine/how_to/html-pages/microsoft-filter.htm

(You can also use the filter to clean up the HTML created by other MS Office 2000 applications, such as Excel.)
