Discounted Software for Educational Use

One of the frequently asked questions by faculty and staff has to do with obtaining discounted software through UMUC. Based on this popular demand, we attempted to gather information on what is currently available to our faculty, students and staff in collaboration with the Information Technology department and Software Engineering Program at GSMT. Below is a summary of software available for both UMUC-owned and employee-owned equipment.

Software Available for Campus-Wide Installation on UMUC-Owned Equipment

Under the Maryland Education Enterprise Consortium Agreement (MEEC), which includes University System of Maryland and K-16 education partners in Maryland, UMUC can install the following Microsoft software on all university-owned equipment:

  • Office Suite (Office Pro Windows or Mac)
  • FrontPage
  • Visual Studio.Net Pro
  • OS Upgrade (Windows XP Pro)
  • Core Client Access Licenses (Exchange, SharePoint Portal, Systems Management, Windows)
  • Project Professional

Under the MEEC Agreement UMUC can install the following McAfee software on all university-owned equipment:

  • McAfee VirusScan

All other software packages are purchased ad-hoc, wherein each time a software package is installed, UMUC pays for the license before installation. This includes former Macromedia and Adobe software packages such as Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Contribute, Photoshop, as well as others.

Software Available for Non UMUC-Owned Equipment

A number of vendors have ended extending software licenses to employees for their home computers under the MEEC agreement. However, this software can be obtained at discounted prices through multiple channels. Below is a summary listing:

Purchase From: Bell Industries (a Microsoft Education Large Account Reseller) Web Site. An agreement been concluded with e-academy, a subsidiary of Bell Industries. Only Microsoft program products are covered, and the software is offered at below-street price, but certainly not free. Students and faculty will find a link at MyUMUC or on the UMUC Intranet.

Please note that if you are a GSMT faculty member, you can contact Linda Lassiter for yourself or on behalf of your students. Students, interested in the purchasing of software, should contact you, their instructor, first. The request must come from the instructor. Please do not have your students contact Professor Lassiter directly as their request will not be honored.

These programs are a wonderful benefit for our students and faculty as they can receive the software at discounted prices. We hope that SUS faculty will soon have their contact as well, which will be listed on DE Oracle as soon as it is available.
