Information and Library Services (ILS) announces a new database, database
enhancements, and a new multimedia presentation to make it easier for
you and your students to navigate the library databases and find the
resources you need.
Database Additions and Enhancements
- New Sage Database
Sage Full-Text Collections: Psychology is a significant addition to UMUC's
resources in journals. The main focus of the Sage collection of 30 e-journals
is psychology, but it is also a good source for research on the psychological
aspects of business, management, and education. Many of the ILS databases
link to the collection so that articles from Sage psychology journals will
be accessible in full text when searching the databases.
- More SWOT Analyses and Market Research Reports in Business Source
Premier
As reported in earlier issues ( Sept./Oct.
2004, Nov./Dec.2004),
Business Source Premier includes company, industry, and country reports.
Many of its company reports contain SWOT analyses of the company's strengths
and weaknesses. Now there are more than 2,000 SWOT analyses available, and
in the coming months Business Source Premier will add several dozen more.
To find the company reports, click on the Company Profiles tab at the top
of the EBSCOHOST screen and enter the company name in the browse box.
Another recent enhancement is the addition of Gartner Market
Research Reports. At this time there are recent reports on the
healthcare, manufacturing, media research, retail, travel, automotive,
financial services, and cross-industry markets with plans to
add more reports. To access these reports, follow the directions
below.

- Creating Microsoft Excel Files in Mergent Online
Mergent Online is an excellent database for research on company and industry
information. In it you will find data about United States and international
companies, including history, business, property, subsidiaries, officers,
directors, long-term debt, bond ratings, capital stock, income statement,
balance sheet, statements of cash flow, exchange and ticker symbol, ratios,
annual stock price ranges, stock splits, dividend payment history and more.
You'll also retrieve Edgar filings dating back to 1993 and updated daily
as well as industry reports on selected industries.
One useful feature is the ability to download financial information for
companies and create comparison reports of companies by industry into Microsoft
Excel files. For assistance in creating these reports, please view the
tutorial, Creating
Microsoft Excel files in Mergent Online. You will find the link to
this guide on the Library
Databases and E-Journals page at the Search Tips link under the database
title.

New Find-It Multimedia Guide
When you search a database and retrieve a citation to an article that
is not full-text in that database, often you will see a find-it button.
You may have clicked on that button and been puzzled about what to do
next. ILS has created an audiovisual
presentation to make it easier for you to understand the options
you see. Share it with your students to give them a better understanding
of how to link to the full text of an article if it is available in a
different database or to link to other options that exist for obtaining
the article in full text. |
