UMUC has a few software packages available for free to our faculty members
which are currently available via the WebTycho classroom. These
software packages include Impatica for PowerPoint, McAfee VirusScan with
AutoUpdate, and the Sun Java Virtual Machine. They can be found under the
Faculty Center starting with fall 2004 classes (indicated by the "0409" semester
code). Links to each of these appear on the Facutly Center page in WebTycho, just below the Faculty
Resources section.

Anti-Virus Software
Protecting
the faculty member's computer from viruses is vital to staying active in the online classroom.
Although there are no 100% effective safeguards, a virus-scanning software
package is the best assurance for keeping a computer clean from viruses,
both intentional and unintentional. While there are packages for purchase
out on the market, UMUC has made VirusScan v4.5.1 available free of charge
to WebTycho faculty members. It can easily be downloaded and installed
on a home machine. While just having the software is a crucial first
step, keeping the software updated is paramount to maintaining a healthy
computer. VirusScan has a feature called AutoUpdate that will always
ensure that the latest DAT file is downloaded. Faculty members should follow
the instructions to turn this feature on when choosing this anti-virus
software.
Java Virtual Machine (JVM)
The Sun Java Virtual Machine is necessary in
order to use the full set of the features that WebTycho has to offer.
Because it has been integrated into WebTycho for so long, the JVM has
been available for a while from both the Faculty Center as well as the
Account Preferences pages. This way students have access to it as well.
There are different versions of the JVM depending on the operating system
being used and it is important to pick the correct one from the list
presented.
JVM on CD
or those who have a slower connection or do not wish to download the Anti-Virus
Software and the JVM, these are available for mailing on a CD. All that
is needed is to send an email to cdrequest@umuc.edu with a request that
the CD be sent. At this time, this only applies to the free Anti-Virus
software or the Java Virtual Machine.
Impatica for PowerPoint
Impatica for PowerPoint is a program that can be used to make PowerPoint
presentations web friendly. Impatica is a program that will let users add audio
narration to PowerPoint presentation and then "impaticizes" it into a file
that can be played on most machines with updated Java. This does require server
space in order to upload an impaticized presentation, such as a Polaris account
that all faculty can receive from UMUC. For convenience. Impatica provides
a full User's
Manual online. To read more about Impatica and the benefit of making PowerPoint
presentations web ready, please see previous DE Oracle articles on Non
Web-Ready Documents (part II): The Problems with PowerPoint and What to Do
About It? and Options
for Streaming PowerPoint Presentations. UMUC has a site license for Impatica
that is valid until July 1, 2005, and it comes with a full service agreement
and maintenance releases until the end of the license.
