Database Additions and Enhancements

Upgrades to Standard & Poor's NetAdvantage

We have some exciting new upgrades to our Standard & Poor's NetAdvantage subscription! In addition to Industry Surveys and the Register of Companies and Executives, you can now access Bond Reports, Company Profiles, and Stock Reports. These services have been added in response to the many recent student and faculty requests. To use these resources, log into S&P NetAdvantage, then click on the drop down menu in the "Publication Search" section and select an item from the menu. Using the "search by" drop down menu, you can search by either Ticker or Company Name, or enter your own search terms in the adjacent field.

Current Electronic Resources, New Interfaces!

Several of our electronic resources have introduced improved search interfaces, including IngentaConnect, NetLibrary, Periodicals Index and Archive Online, and ScienceDirect. Take a look at each and let us know what you think!

For Your Information...

Student ID Cards

Students must print a new UMUC student ID card each semester from the MyUMUC student portal at https://my.umuc.edu. Students will need a current UMUC ID card to access library services, computer labs, and campus transportation. The UMUC library barcode number that appears on the student ID card is needed to log into UMUC's library databases, online services, and the University System of Maryland and affiliated institutions (USMAI) library catalog. If students visit a USMAI library in person, they must present their printed UMUC student ID card along with a driver's license or other photo ID to borrow library materials.

ID cards for the fall 2006 semester will be available for students to print seven days prior to the start of their classes. To print a student ID card, students can login to MyUMUC, choose "Student Portal," select "MyInfo," and click on "My UMUC ID Card".

Dorsey Station Library Now Open

A new ILS branch is now open at UMUC's Dorsey Station location. The Dorsey Station library provides computers to access UMUC's online full-text article and e-book collection, a small book collection, and a comfortable seating area for reading. UMUC students, faculty, and staff will be able to request USMAI library books for pickup and return at Dorsey Station, a service formerly available at the now closed Annapolis Center location. The library, located in Room 2113, will be open from noon to 9 pm Mondays through Thursdays, noon to 5 pm on Fridays, and 9 am to 1 pm on Saturdays. A librarian will be available to assist with reference questions and research.

Synchronous Online Workshops

ILS is offering a series of online, real-time workshops to introduce students, faculty, and staff to useful databases, helpful citation tools, and other important library resources. In a these workshops, you'll hear a librarian speaking to you live while you view a database demonstration, a Power Point slide, and other instructional material. You'll use chat to ask questions and to communicate with the librarian and your fellow workshop participants. All you need is an Internet browser and computer speakers. Register soon, because the workshops fill up fast! Additional information about upcoming workshops and the registration form are available from the Center for Teaching and Learning.

Expanded Instant Messaging (IM) Reference Hours

ILS is expanding IM reference hours to include evening and weekend hours. Beginning this fall, IM reference will be available on a trial basis Monday through Thursday from 1-9 pm ET, Friday 1-5pm ET, and Saturday and Sunday 1-5pm ET.

This service can be accessed by sending an instant message to one of the library's screen names (umuclibrary in AIM and Yahoo Messenger, library@umuc.edu in MSN Messenger). IM software downloads, links to Web-based IM applications, and additional information about this exciting new service are available at the library's Instant Message a Librarian page.

VLIB 101

VLIB 101, ILS' popular WebTycho-based library orientation classroom, has been redesigned for the Fall semester. The classroom now includes information on new library resources and services such as Instant-Message-A-Librarian, and improved navigation. Students also have more opportunities than ever to interact with a UMUC librarian through VLIB 101, and to effectively orient themselves to using the library's resources to complete their research assignments. For more information on VLIB 101, please see: http://www.umuc.edu/library/vlc.shtml
