Using Helix Producer Basic

For this exercise you will need to download Helix Producer.

The POINT of this Exercise is to make certain you...
know how to complete the following procedures, 

NOTE: The web page, audio clip, and .rpm/ram file need to be located in the same directory, or the clip will not play.

Earphone & Speaker

Helix Producer Basic creates streaming multimedia presentations with RealAudio and RealVideo technology using the following file formats as the source material: 
  • Waveform audio (.wav) 
  • Video for Windows (.avi) 
  • Audio (.au) 
  • QuickTime for Windows (.mov)

Note:  If you have not already installed Helix Producer Basic, please do so now.  

Go to: http://www.realnetworks.com/products/producer/basic.html

Helix Producer Basic should be located towards the bottom of the page. Make sure you download the basic player. This is the free version. Click on a location near you to begin downloading.  If prompted, choose Save to Disk and specify the directory where you want the Helix Producer installation program to be saved. 

Next, locate and launch the file you downloaded, by exploring your hard drive or choosing the Run option in the Start menu. (The file is where your Web browser saved it.) This will install the Helix Producer Basic program.

EXERCISE 3

Learning the Helix Producer Window

Input Side

Allows you to select an audio/video file to be encoded.
Allows you to use a specific device to create an audio/video (eg., microphone, webcam, camcorder).
List the properties of the audio/video clip.

Output Side

Add File Destination for Output -- Allows you to designate the output name and destination of where the new encoded file will be located. (The new encoded file can be stored in the same folder as the original .wav file).
Add Server Destination -- Allows you to add the name of the sever you will be using. (eg., Polaris.umuc.edu).
Edit Destination -- Allows you to edit the file destination name and location.
Remove Destination -- Allows you to remove a file destination.

Encoding the Audio/Video File

1. 

Once installed, open Helix Producer Basic by clicking:

Start -->Programs-->

From the Helix Producer main window, on the Input side, select the Input File radio button then click on Browse and navigate to your audio file (eg., C:\My Documents\audio\intro.wav).

From the Output side, select . The Save as dialog box will appear. In the File name box, give the new encoded audio/video file a name (The file name can be the same as the original file name (eg., intro). Note: You do not need to add the .rm extension. It will be added for you once you click on Save).

Once you have typed in a file name, click Save.

Click on . For an audio clip, use the following image to fill in the listed fields. After highlighting the sever rate from the window on the left, use the arrow in the middle of the two windows to move the 56K Dial-up template to the window on the right. (Note: To remove a serve rate listed in the right-hand box, click on the sever rate name to highlight, then click on the trash can to remove it). Use the X button in the top right-hand corner to close the Audiences property box.

Click on . Use the following image to fill in the listed fields. Use the X button in the top right-hand corner to close the Clip Information property box.

  • Title = Introduction
  • Author = Your Name (e.g., John Smith)
  • Copyright = ©2002 or leave blank
  • Keywords = enter keywords or leave blank 
  • Description = brief summary or leave blank 
  • Rating = add a rating to the audio/video clip or leave blank

6. 

Click on the to start encoding the audio/video file.

Once the audio/video had been encoded, Complete will show up under Status.

7.  Click on (lower right-hand corner) to test the newly encoded audio file.
8.  You can now close the Helix Producer and proceed to Exercise 3a.
