Make Lectures Sing Using Netscape Composer (Part One)

 
The POINT of this Training Exercise is to make certain you know how to:
  • Understand basic HTML document structure;
  • Create HTML Document in Composer;
  • Add basic formatting to your Web pages.

WHAT TO DO

A. Create an HTML file in Netscape Composer (WYSIWYG Editor)

WYSIWYG = (What You See Is What You Get)


1. In Netscape Navigator, select File --> New --> Blank Page (or Ctrl-Shift-N). 

B. Add a Page Title

1. Select Format-->Page Colors and Properties from the Toolbar
2. Click on the General Tab and change the default title to WebTycho Training - Lecture 1.

(note:  when you close the properties window, the blue bar at the top of your screen should change accordingly)

3. Save the file in by selecting File --> Save as from the Toolbar.  

Navigate to the A:\ drive.  

Before clicking on save, select A: from the Save in: box.  Click on the Create New Folder icon (the third icon to the right of the Save in: box).  In the Name: dialog box, type Class_Home and click on OK

Double-click on the Class_Home folder and click on Save (save the file as session1.htm). 

C.Insert a Background Image

1. Open a new Navigator Window (Ctrl-N).  Go to:

(TIP:  templates 2, 3 & 4 contain background images)

2. Save background image: 
  • Right click on the page
  • Click on Save Background As
  • In the "Save As" dialog box, use the arrows to negotiate to your Class_Home folder
  • Click on Save at the bottom right of the dialog box
3. Return to blank page in Netscape Composer 
4. Select Format-->Page Colors and Properties from the Toolbar
5. Click on the Colors and Background Tab. 
6. Under Background Image, select Choose File...

Use the arrows to negotiate to your Class_Home folder.
Double-click on the background file (e.g., back_de1.gif) and click on OK.

(note:  when you close the properties window, the background image should be visible on the page.)

7. Save the file by clicking on the Save icon Save Icon on the toolbar.

D. Add a Class Bar

1. Go back to

(or open a new Navigator Window (Ctrl-N).  Go to:

2. Select and Save Class Bar: 
  • Right click on the image
  • Click on Save Image As
  • In the "Save As" dialog box, use the arrows to negotiate to your Class_Home folder
  • Click on Save at the bottom right of the dialog box
3. Return to page in Netscape Composer 
4. Place your cursor on the page where you want the image to appear.
5. Click on the Image Icon image icon on the toolbar.  Make certain the image tab is open in the Image Properties dialog box.
6. Click on Choose File

Use the arrows to negotiate to your Class_Home folder.
Double-click on the class bar file (e.g., bar_lb_tlmn_635.gif) and click on OK.

(note:  when you close the properties window, the class bar should be visible on the page.)

7. Click on the image and Select the Increase Indent icon increase indent icon on the toolbar.
8. Save the file by clicking on the Save icon Save Icon on the toolbar.
9. Continue to Part 2.
