Make Lectures Sing Using Netscape Composer (Part Two)

 
The POINT of this Training Exercise is to make certain you know how to:
  • Edit HTML Document in Composer;
  • Learn how to use tables to format text in your Web pages.

WHAT TO DO

A. Edit HTML file in Netscape Composer (WYSIWYG Editor)

WYSIWYG = (What You See Is What You Get)


Note: If you just finished Part 1 and have the file you created from that lesson still open, proceed to Section B.

1. In Netscape Composer, select File-->Open Page-->Choose File...

2.  Negotiate to your Class_Home folder, double-click on session1.htm and select Open.

B. Create a Table

1. Select Insert --> Table --> Table
2. Specify New Table Properties and click on OK

 
Number of Rows 1
Number of Columns 2
Table Alignment Center
Border Line Width 0
Cell Spacing 0
Cell Padding 0
Table Width 80%

C. Edit Table (Row/Cell) Properties

1. Insert your cursor into the left-hand cell.  
2. Right click and select Table Properties
3. Select the Cell Tab 
4. Select Format-->Page Colors and Properties from the Toolbar
5. Click on the Colors and Background Tab. 
6. Under Cell Background, select the gray box next to Use Color: to choose a background color.  Click on OK.

D. Add Text to Table

1.  In the colored cell, type in a short welcome (including your e-mail address.)
2. Highlight your e-mail address and select the Link icon Link icon on the toolbar.

In the Link to a page location or local file box, type:  mailto:your_email_address    (e.g., mailto:yourname@umuc.edu)

E. Add Photo to Table

1.  Go to Altavista (http://www.altavista.com/sites/search/simage)
2.  Use the "Image Search" to find an image of your favorite celebrity. Type in the name of the celebrity in the search box. Make your selection for the type of image you want, b-w/color, graphic, photo, etc.
3.  Click on the "Search" button to start the search.
5.  Save the photo:
  • Right click on the image
  • Click on Save Image As
  • In the "Save As" dialog box, use the arrows to negotiate to your Class_Home folder
  • Click on Save at the bottom right of the dialog box

6.  Insert the image you just downloaded into your web page.

Insert your cursor into the white cell.  Click on the Image Icon Image icon on the toolbar. 

(Tip:  Hit the tab key to quickly jump from cell to cell.)

7. Click on Choose File

Use the arrows to negotiate to your Class_Home folder.
Double-click on the photo (e.g., photo.jpg) and click on OK.

8. Save the file by clicking on the Save icon Save icon on the toolbar.
9. Continue to Part 3.
