Relative vs. Absolute Linking

There are two kinds of URLs: relative and absolute. Absolute URLs have every part of the URL specified: the protocol, the server, and the full pathname of the desired document. Relative URLs omit any or all of these items, assuming that the browser will fill in the missing pieces.

For relative linking:

  1. If you are referencing a document in the same directory, link to page.html

  2. If you are referencing a document in a subdirectory, link to ./subdir/page.html

  3. If you are referencing a document in a parent directory, link to ../page.html or ../anothersubdir/page.html

  4. If you need to go back two directories start with ../../ and so forth for three, etc.

For absolute linking:

  1. Specify the complete URL (universal resource locator): http://www.umuc.edu/library/database/description.html

  2. Use absolute linking for pages which are not located on in your class directory

1.  Highlight an item on your bulleted list.
2.  Create a relative link to a file.
  • Click on the Link icon Link icon on the toolbar.
  • Select the Choose File... button, next to the Link to a page location or local file box.
  • Negotiate to your Lesson_Home folder and double-click on the lesson1.htm file.
  • Click on OK
3.  Highlight an item on your numbered list.
4.  Create an absolute link to a file.
  • Click on the Link icon Link icon on the toolbar.
  • In the Link to a page location or local file box, type in a URL (e.g.,  http://www.umuc.edu/library)
  • Click on OK.
