Create a Slide-Show Presentation using Impatica

Note:  Faculty can download Impatica for free.  Simply go to the Faculty Center menu located in your WebTycho clasroom.  There you will find a link to download Impatica.

1.  Use PowerPoint to create a slide show.

2. Start Impatica for PowerPoint and select the Add button.

3.  Using the Open dialog window, select the PowerPoint presentation you want to Impaticize, or browse to find the directory where you have stored your PowerPoint file. Select the PowerPoint file and click on the Open button.

Note:  The PowerPoint file name will appear under the Source PowerPoint Files window.

4.  Select the Slide Show options.

  • Save Location:  Determines the location where all generated Impatica files will be stored.  (Note:  it's best to leave the default location, which is the location of the PowerPoint source file.  If you want to change the location of the generated Impatica files, select the browse button and select the desired location.)
  • Impatica File Format:  This feature will allow Impatica to generate the proper files to run the Impatica presentation. Select "New Impatica File Format" and "Apply Extra Compression".
  • Playback Controls:  This feature allows the user to control the playback of the presentation.  You can select the Foreground and Background color of the playback controls
  • Target Screen Dimensions:  This allows you to select a target screen size. Unless the target audience is for hand-held devices use the default "Automatic".
  • Loading Color:  This feature allows you to select the color of the background portion of the loading indicator. Leave as default color or select a color that compliments the presentation.

5.  Select the Media options.

Note:  Only AVI and WAV files can be Impaticized.  All other formats will not function in the Impaticized slide show.

  • Wait for Sound:  The wait for Sound option enables the precise synchronization of narration with the presentation. By waiting for the sound to complete before advancing to the next animation or the next slide, it is guaranteed that sound will not be cut-off and that the presentation will remain precisely synchronized across all receiving platforms.
  • JPEG Images: You can specify the quality to be applied to JPEG images. For most images, 70% quality will result in significant compression without a significant loss of quality.
  • Animation Playback : This options determines the timing and appearance of animations in the impaticized presentation. Select the version of PowerPoint you are using.
  • Video:  Selecting this option will convert any embedded videos found within the source PowerPoint presentation. A target speed must be selected.
  • Make hyperlinks open new window:  If this option is selected, all hyperlinks to URLs will open a new browser window and display the desired page within the new window.
  • Make all animations automatic: Selecting this option will cause Impatica to override the animation on mouse click setting that has been set in the PowerPoint presentation. If this option is selected, all animations will occur automatically, without waiting for a mouse click.
  • Sound Format:
    • Compact - Converts sound objects to Impatica's compact sound format.  Best for streaming sound over the Internet.
    • AU µLaw (5 x Compact size) - Sound will be converted using a larger, but higher quality sound format than that produced using the "Compact" sound setting. Works best within a controlled network where a sizeable bandwidth is always available to the end users.
    • WAV PCM (10 x Compact size) - Sound will be converted to the highest quality sound format, but with the highest file size. Works best when distributing content via CD-ROM or within a network with extremely high bandwidth.

6.  Select the Extra Output options.

  • Generated Support Files
    • HTML file - Will create an HTML file (web page) that can be used to preview the impaticized file.  The HTML file will be saved in the same folder as the corresponding Impatica file.
    • Zip package - Will create a zip file that contains the impaticized presentation, the Impatica player applet and an HTML page.
    • SCORM package - Will produce a SCORM conformant sharable content object. This package can be used within a SCORM conformant learning management system.
    • BlackBerry web files - This option will only be enabled if the Impatica File Format selected is "BlackBerry File Format".
    • .ipk package - Will produces a file that is suitable for viewing on Sharp Zaurus handheld devices.
  • Exported Notes:
    • HTML file - Will extract text from the Notes section of the PowerPoint presentation as an HTML file.
    • Plain text file - Will extract text from the Notes section of the PowerPoint presentation as a plain text file.
    • OnCue script file -Will extract text from the Notes section of
PowerPoint presentation and generate a tagged Impatica script file, for use in Impatica OnCue.

7.   Select Impaticize button to start slide show conversion.

Note:  When you click the Impaticized button, the Conversion Progress screen will appear showing the progress of the conversion. In some cases, it may take a few moments for progress to begin showing and could take a few moments for it's completion.

8. Once the PowerPoint presentation has been Impaticized, the following dialog box will appear.  From the "Web Server Upload" tab select the Connect button.

9. Fill in the Server Information:

  • FTP Port: is an optional parameter that may be required due to the unique set-up of your FTP server. The default value is port 21. Normally, this field is left blank.
  • FTP User Name:Polaris user name (the login name you use to log into your Polaris account).
  • FTP Password: Polaris user name (the password you use to log into your Polaris account).
  • Web Documents Folder: /www/foldername (where foldername = the name of the folder you will be publishing the Impatica files to.

  • Connection Type: can be set to Active or Passive. Active is the default connection type that will be applicable to most FTP servers. • Upon connecting, ensure Impatica applet is on server: specifies whether or not
Impatica should verify that the applet files exist on the FTP server. When this
option is selected, the files will be automatically uploaded if they are not already on the server.
  • Remember Password: allows you to indicate either to save an encrypted
version of your password with the other settings or to omit the password from saving. Use this option only if you are using your own computer. Do not use this option if you are in a lab.

Once the information is filled in, select the Connect button.

10. After a server connection has been established you will need to publish the Impatica files to the server.

Be sure that Include HTML is checked then select the Put All Files button. This will publish all the files that Impatica has generated for the slide show.

11. Once the Impatica files have been published, test the Impatica presentation in the browser to ensure the presentation is functioning properly.
