Use CoreFTP for File Transfer

Transferring files from your local site (hard drive) to a sever (Polaris) can be accomplished in a number of ways. One option is to use a third party FTP client such as CoreFTP. 

CoreFTP LE is free for educational use. With CoreFTP you can transfer files to and from your Polaris account, delete entire directory folders and change file permissions.

To continue with the hands-on exercise, you will need to download CoreFTP.

PART ONE - Connecting to Polaris (Nova) using CoreFTP

  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet via your Internet Service Provider (ISP) before opening CoreFTP.
  • Open CoreFTP.
  • The Site Manager dialog box should be visible (see image)

Using the Site Manager dialog box fill in the following information:

  1. Site Name - Some name you choose to identify this site. It can be your name or the name of your course. it doesn't matter.
  2. Host/IP/URL-  polaris.umuc.edu  (for nova account holders: nova.umuc.edu)
  3. User Name -  Polaris (or Nova) user name.
  4. Password - Polaris (or Nova) password.
  5. Remote Start Folder -- www (if you have subfolders within the www directory, such as admn635, then you could type in www/admn635).
  6. Local Start Folder -- Use the browse button to the right of the text box to select the folder that holds your web pages.
  7. Once you have filled you information click on the Connect button.

If you receive an error try typing in the login name and password again.  If you continue to encounter login problems, your password may have expired.  See note below. 

If your Polaris password has expired (twice a year), you will not be able to connect to Polaris via CoreFTP, you will need to change the password via telnet first. See http://info.umuc.edu/de/ezine/how_to/polaris_acctchange_polaris_password.htm if you are not sure how to do this.

Once you click on the Connect button, the Site Manager dialog box will disappear and you will be left with main window. The connection may take a few moments, so it may appear that CoreFTP isn't connecting to Polaris.  You can tell that a connection to Polaris is being attempted by looking at the Session Log box.

By default, the right window (remote system) shows the contents of the server (e.g., UMUC's Polaris or Nova server).  The left window (local system) shows the contents of your hard-drive. 

PART TWO - Publishing to the WWW Directory

Will access the Site Manager dialog box.
Will reconnect you to the sever should your session be interrupted. 
Will create a new directory/folder .
Will refresh the site.
Will take you up a directory.
Will upload files to the sever.
Will download files to your hard drive
Delete File/Directory To delete a file or directory, right-click on the file/directory deleted and select DELETE from the mini menu.

If you want to transfer an entire folder to the Polaris server, using the left window, click on the folder you want to transfer, the click on the arrow to transfer the files to the Polaris server.

You can also transfer individual files by selecting the file then clicking on the arrow to transfer the file.
