Publish a Web Page Using CuteFTP

The POINT of this Training Exercise is to make certain you know how to:
  • connect to Polaris;
  • create and manage folders;
  • upload files
CuteFTP is a Windows-based File Transfer Protocol (FTP) client that allows users to utilize the capabilities of FTP without having to know all the details of the protocol itself.

Download a free 30-day trial version of CuteFTP. After that time, you must register the program to continue using it.

WHAT TO DO

PART ONE - Setting Up CuteFTP

1.  Connect to your Internet Service Provider (ISP). (Disregard this step if you are in the lab).

Before you can connect to your FTP site, you must be connected to your ISP. Unless you are connected to your ISP before you launch CuteFTP, it will not connect to any FTP site.

2. Start CuteFTP by clicking the CuteFTP icon that was created during installation. If a desktop icon wasn't created during the installation, you can select CuteFTP from the Windows program menu.

The Site Manager screen will be displayed. This is where you will enter the FTP server information to connect to the remote computer where your files will reside. The Site Manager has two windows. The left window contains several predefined folders. In the right window, the contents of any selected folder are displayed.

3.  Configure your FTP Connection. In the Site Manager window, click the Add Site button. This will bring up the Add Host Screen where you will store your server information. The four boxes that need to filled out are: Site Label, Host Address, User ID and Password.

  • Site Label - Identify the site in the Site Manager (Polaris or your first name or the name of the course. It doesn't matter.)
  • Host Address -  Address to Polaris server -- polaris.umuc.edu  (for nova account holders: nova.umuc.edu)
  • User I.D. -  Polaris (or Nova) user name
  • Password - Polaris (or Nova) password

(Do not click on the Save Pwd  box next unless this is on your own machine).

Add Host Screen

To modify your server information, highlight your site in the Site Manager and click the Edit Site button. Make your modifications and click OK. You can also rename and delete sites and folders from the Site Manager with the corresponding buttons.

PART TWO - Connecting to Polaris using CuteFTP

1. Connect to Polaris (Nova).  Highlight the site you created and click the Connect button.  After connecting, click the OK button at the bottom of the screen.

2. The Add Host window goes away and you will only see the Site Manager window.

PART THREE - Creating a Course Folder

1.  By default, The left window (local system) in the Site Manager shows the contents of the CuteFTP folder.  Double-clicking  on the yellow folder will take you back to the C:\ directory.  You can also use the scroll bar to move down to the list of other drives including your floppy.  Double-clicking on any of the drive letters will display the contents of that drive.

By default, the right window (remote system) in the Site Manager shows the contents of your Polaris (nova) account.  Double-click on the www folder to open it.  Select Make a New Directory (Ctrl-M) from the Command menu.

2. The following box will appear. Enter the course abbreviation and number as one word, all lower-case.  For example, gsmt800,  gsmt725,  admn601, csmn636, tman613.

PART FOUR - Transferring file(s) to Polaris (Nova)

1.  Double-click on your course folder to open it.  (The first time you do this, the right window will be empty after you double-click on your course folder). Select the files or folder  from your floppy or hard drive (left window)  that you want to transfer to Polaris (Nova).

Use the Main Screen to drag your files to the server. This screen is divided into four windows: an upper horizontal window, two lower vertical windows, and a bottom horizontal window.

  • Upper Window (Log). This is where the commands CuteFTP gives the server as well as the server's responses are displayed.
  • Lower Left Window (Local). The lower left window displays the selected directory from your hard drive.
  • Lower Right Window (Remote). The lower right window displays the files and directories on your server.
  • Bottom Window (Queue). The queue window is used for temporary storage of files you wish to transfer at a later time.

There are five methods of accomplishing this:

    1. Drag and Drop -- Highlight the file(s) on your local drive that you want to upload. Use your left mouse button to "grab" the highlighted file(s) and drag it (them) to the right window and drop it (them) anywhere in that window. By default, you will receive a prompt to "upload selected file?". Click the OK button after you have verified the file name(s). The upper window will display commands, statuses, and the server's response to your commands.

    2. Highlight the file(s) you want to upload in the left screen and then click the Upload button located at the top of the CuteFTP screen below the Menu Bar. It looks like an arrow pointing up. If that button is not highlighted, you have failed to highlight the files you want to upload. When you click the Upload button, the Confirm Upload screen, as in the previous method, will prompt you. You may accomplish the same thing by selecting Commands/Upload from the Menu Bar.

    3. Double click the file you would like to upload. By default CuteFTP takes that action as a Transfer File request.

    4. Highlight the file you want to upload and RIGHT click it. LEFT click the upload option in the Menu that appears. Continue as in the previous methods.

The files will appear in the right window (Polaris or Nova).

When creating Web pages, you should save the page to its own file folder on your floppy or hard drive, especially if you are using any graphics (.gif or .jpg) with that page. It is much easier to transfer the entire folder (which contains both the graphics and the Web (html) page) to Polaris. Also, always keep your file names to eight characters or less, all lowercase

2.  If you have created a web page with graphics or other images, you should double-check your work. here's how:

In Netscape Navigator, type in the URL for your webpage.  The URL will always follow the same format*: http://polaris.umuc.edu/~username/coursefolder/filename.htm

    Example:  http://polaris.umuc.edu/~gthorpe/admn601/drucker.htm

- or, if you transferred an entire folder to polaris

http://polaris.umuc.edu/~username/coursefolder/pagefolder/filename.htm

    Example: http://polaris.umuc.edu/~tfield/admn601/module5/module5.htm

  * By default, Netscape Communicator saves HTML files with an htm extension (not html).  If you are using another page composer program, your files may be saved with the .html (rather than .htm) extension.  When you enter the URL for your page in Navigator, you must correctly specify the correct .htm or .html extension. If you are not sure of your file extension, connect to your Polaris (or Nova) account with CuteFTP to double-check.

Trouble-shooting

If your page doesn't display properly, use CuteFTP to look at the folder and file names in your Polaris (or Nova) account.  Check to make sure that the file name (or folder name) in the URL is an identical match to what you uploaded into Polaris.  For example:

If the URL reads: http://polaris.umuc.edu/~tfield/admn601/module5/module5.htm,  but the folder you uploaded was labeled as Module 5 (instead of module5),  the page will not display.
