Set Permissions using WS-FTP

blank Spacer Image

Open Internet Explorer (IE). Make sure you are connected to the Internet via your Internet Service Provider (ISP). In the IE address window, type ftp://polaris.umuc.edu.  Log into Polaris using your login name and password.

There are three key elements in the setting of file permissions:
r
read the file or directory
w
write to the file or directory
x
execute the file or directory

Each element is assigned a value:

  • read = 4
  • write = 2
  • execute = 1

The chart to the right shows the permissions set to 755. It grants the owner the right to read, write and execute a file. It allows all other users to read and execute a file, but does not allow them to write (make changes to the file).
