Workshop Agenda

Introduction and Agenda

  • What's so Cool about Dreamweaver? 
  • Concepts of roundtrip HTML, DHTML, JavaScript, CSS, and XML: what they do and why you should be interested

By the end of this workshop you should be able to:

  • Build a simple site of three linking pages, add images, backgrounds, and tables
  • Cut/paste html code from an existing web page
  • Publish files to the server
  • Add a rollover (if time permits)

Pre-Workshop Task

Skills/Tasks

  • Ensure everyone has an active server account (Polaris or Nova).
Using "My Computer"
  • Create directory "course-name" where course name is the class you are developing the site for (e.g., csmn639, admn625, etc.). 
  • Create a subdirectory "lessons"
  • Copy the images folder from floppy disk into the course-name folder 
  • Copy the three html pages [readmefirst, lesson_guide_temp, and lesson_01]) from floppy disk into the lessons folder

Procedure:

  1. Watch Demonstration.
  2. Everybody do this together.

Tour of Dreamweaver -- Getting Acquainted with the Interface

Skills/Tasks

  • Dreamweaver 4 workspace vs. Dreamweaver MX workspace
  • Preferences (Layout view, Window Sizes, Status Bar, Load Time)
  • The Property inspector and Insert bar
  • Cool features easy to miss: including Word cleanup

Procedure:

  • Watch Demonstration
  • Everyone in Lab follow along either on computer, or by watching the screen.

Exercise 1 -- Explore and Use the Site Management Window

Skills/Tasks

  • Explore the Dreamweaver Site Management window.
  • Practice defining a class site.

Procedure:

  1. Watch Demonstration.
  2. Everybody do this together.

Exercise 2 -- Set Up an HTML Document

Skills/Tasks

  • Open a blank page
  • Save and name page "lesson_guide.htm"
  • Add page title
  • Set margins
  • Add background image

Procedure:

  1. Watch Demonstration
  2. Work Individually. 
    • Ask for Help when you need it.

Exercise 3 -- Add Tables, Images, Anchors and Links

Skills/Tasks

  • Open readme.htm
  • Add a table
  • Add title bar
  • Add separator bar
  • Add an anchor -- "internal" links
  • Build navigation footer and make "external" links: one relative, one absolute

Procedure:

  1. Watch Demonstration
  2. Work Individually. 
    • Ask for Help when you need it.

Exercise 4 -- Cut and Paste Content from an Existing Document

Skills/Tasks

  • Open "lesson_guide.htm"
  • Open "lesson_guide_temp.htm
  • Copy/Paste entire content from "lesson_guide_temp" to "lesson_guide"

Procedure:

  1. Watch Demonstration
  2. Work Individually. 
    • Ask for Help when you need it.

Exercise 5 -- Publish HTML Files Using the Site Management Window

Skills/Tasks

  • Open Site Management window
  • Connect to server
  • Publish local files to the server
