Note -- QuickTime Alternative: Please note that Mac no longer meets the minimum technical requirements for UMUC's Graduate School. Although an older version of PureVoice, compatible with Mac OS 7.x - 9.x is available from QualComm, the latest version of PureVoice is written for Windows XP. If you are unable to install or use PureVoice on your computer, you can use Apple's free QuickTime Player to play (but not record) PureVoice files. QuickTime is compatible with Mac operating systems AND Microsoft Windows 98/NT/Me/2000/XP operating systems. For more information, see: http://info.umuc.edu/mba/public/MBA-QuickTimeAlternative/QuickTimeInstructions.html

Downloading the PureVoice Player-Recorder:
http://info.umuc.edu/mba/PureVoice/PureVoice.zip
Click the download link
provided in the email to save the PureVoice
installation file to your "My Downloads" folder on your hard
drive or your Windows desktop. You will need WinZip to unzip the file. Here is the URL: http://www.winzip.com/index.htm
After you have completed the download, go to your My Downloads folder or Windows desktop (where ever you saved the installation file) and double-click on PureVoice.exe file.
You will get a pop-up box stating whether to Run or Cancel, choose Run.
The install is complete. If the program opens after installation, close it and proceed to the instructions below for either Listening to PureVoice Files or Recording PureVoice Files.
Listening To Pure Voice Files (Scroll Down to See Recording)
If you receive the PureVoice recording via email or in your online classroom, the file will appear as an attachment (your attachment icon may look different than the one shown below) The filename extension for PureVoice files is qcp.
Step 1: Save The PureVoice File Attachment To Your Hard Drive
DO NOT LEFT CLICK THE ATTACHMENT. Unless your are opening the attachment from within Microsoft Outlook for XP, Windows will not recognize the "qcp" file type. Instead..... RIGHT CLICK THE ATTACHMENT. Right-clicking in Windows produces a context sensitive mini-menu.
From the mini-menu, select "SAVE AS" or "SAVE TARGET AS" to save the file to your hard drive.
This will allow you to save the .qcp (PureVoice) attachment to the My Documents Folder on your hard drive. If you've already created a course-specific sub-directory on your hard drive, you can also save the file to that directory.
Step 2: Open PureVoice And Play The File
To listen to the file you saved in the previous step, Go to the Windows Start Menu. Click Programs, click the PureVoice Program Group, and then click PureVoice.
Once PureVoice is open, click the Open button on the toolbar or click the file menu and select Open.
Locate the PureVoice file in the directory where you saved it during Step 1 above. Select the file and click the Open button. The file will begin playing immediately. You may need to adjust your speaker volume. The play, stop, pause, rewind, and fast forward controls are located at the bottom of the PureVoice player. Do not click the red record button or you will overwrite the file.
For more detailed help topics, including trouble-shooting, click the Help menu at the top of the PureVoice Player. When you are done listening to the file, close PureVoice.
Go to the Windows Start Menu. Click Programs, click the PureVoice Program Group, and then click PureVoice.
Click the Vol button on the PureVoice toolbar to toggle the microphone and speaker controls. To minimize audio feedback and avoid recording the playback of your own voice, move the speaker volume down and the microphone volume up.
Click the red record button and record your message. When your recording is complete, press the green stop button.
If this is your first time using PureVoice, test the file before saving it.
Using the audio input control levers, push the speaker volume up. Then, click the green Play button. If you cannot hear your recording, ensure that the speaker lever is pushed all the way up. If you still cannot hear the recording, try manually adjusting the volume on your computer's speakers. If you still cannot hear the recording, check your microphone. Ensure that it is plugged into the correct port on your computer. Make sure that your microphone is turned on. Click the PureVoice Help menu and refer to the trouble-shooting information for additional help. You can also consult the Help menu on the Windows Start button on your computer or go to Control Panel on your computer and click the Sounds and Audio Devices Icon/link. If you are not sure how to correctly use the Sounds and Audio Devices applet in Control Panel, you will need to refer to Windows Help or the documentation that came with your computer or microphone.
Assuming that you can hear your recording and that you are satisfied with the quality of the recording (if not, try re-recording it and speaking louder into the microphone), you are ready to save the file.
Note: After you record, you will see an attach button. DO NOT CLICK ATTACH. The attach option only works with certain email programs and you may receive an error message. Additionally, because you are using PureVoice for course-related audio recordings, you will want to save a copy of the file to the hard drive folder of your own choice (such as the My Documents folder or a course-specific folder you have already created).
Click the Save button on the PureVoice toolbar or select Save from the File menu. Name your file and then save it.
Once you have saved the PureVoice recording to your hard drive, you can attach the file in WebTycho or to an outgoing email message the same way you would any other type of file attachment.
Note: If you are working in an area of WebTycho where it is possible to add attachments (conferences topics and responses, student assignment folder submissions, study group topics and response, individual assignment submissions received via the instructor gradebook, etc.), the preferred MBA Program delivery method is via attachment in WebTycho (whenever possible) NOT email.
