Configuration Instructions  Opening and Playing PureVoice Files in QuickTime

Some students have reported being unable to use PureVoice on computers running Windows XP (operating system).  A few students using Toshiba Laptops with the Windows 98SE operating system have also reported being unable to use PureVoice.  If you are unable to install or use PureVoice on your computer, you can use Apple's free QuickTime Player to listen to PureVoice files.  QuickTime is compatible with Mac operating systems  AND  Microsoft Windows  98/NT/Me/2000/XP operating systems.

Note:  The instructions below cover the use of QuickTime as an alternative for the PureVoice player.  Although QuickTime can handle a variety of different file formats, you may already be using other programs for those file formats. If you do not wish to use QuickTime as the default player and viewer  for those other formats, follow the recommendations shown below.  While you are free to use the QuickTime player in any manner you wish (for other types audio/graphic files), be advised that the MBA program does not provide technical support for QuickTime beyond the information provided on this webpage

Download Instructions
To download the free QuickTime Player (QuickTime 6 is the current free version and it does not include a recorder) go to:   http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/.  Select the correct version for your operating system.  Save the file to your desktop or the "My Downloads" file on your hard drive.  After you have downloaded the file, double-click the file icon to install the program.  Installation screen shots and text instructions (where necessary) are provided below.

Installation Instructions

Setup Screen: Click Next.

Welcome Screen: Click Next.

License Agreement: Click Agree.

Destination Location: Accept default.

Installation Type:  Minimum (Note: if you are an advanced user and  plan to use the QuickTime player for other media file types, you may select the other two options.  However, you are on your own in terms of support for second two installation options).

If a registration screen appears, you may leave it blank and click the next button.

Once the installation process begins, if you are presented with any "settings" options, accept the default settings.  You will adjust the settings the first time you open the QuickTime Player (additional instructions provided below).

Configuration Instructions

*** First Time Users:  During installation, you were instructed to accept the default settings.  In order to prevent QuickTime from becoming the default player for other media files (audio, video, image files) for which you already have other players/viewers, follow the "Configuration Instructions" below.

Open the QuickTime player from your program menu, the same way you would open any other program.  When you open the player, you may see the "Upgrade" screen inviting you to upgrade to QuickTime Pro.  Select "Later" on this screen if you do not wish to purchase QuickTime Pro.  The QuickTime player will open.

From the file menu, select Preferences and then QuickTime Preferences. The QuickTime Settings box will appear.  All of your QuickTime player settings can be adjusted using the drop down menu and/or the Mime Settings button.

QuickTime Settings:  The following settings are covered in these instructions: Browser Plug-in, Connection Speed,  File Type Associations, Sound Out, Update Check, and Mime Settings.  The following settings, which  are not relevant to using QuickTime as an alternative to the PureVoice Player are not covered below:  Instant On, Language, Media Keys, Registration, Sound In, Streaming Proxy, Streaming Transport.

Select Browser Plug-In from the drop down menu

Change the settings for Browser Plug-in so that they match those on the screen shot shown below.

Select Connection Speed from the drop down menu.  56Kbps Modem is selected speed shown in the screen shot below. If you have a high speed connection to the Internet, use the speed drop down menu to select a higher connection speed.

Select File Type Associations from the drop down menu. Your settings should match those shown below.

Select Sound Out from the drop down box.  Your settings should match those shown below.  (Note: If you can play but not hear an audio file, you may need to return to this setting later and select a different device for playback, based on your own hardware settings).

Select Update Check from the drop down menu. Your settings should match those shown below.  Optional: If you want the QuickTime player to have automatic access to the Internet to check for updates, select "Check for Updates Automatically".

Mime Settings:  Select Browser Plug-in from the drop down menu at  top of the QuickTime settings box.  Click the Mime Settings button located at the bottom of the QuickTime Settings box.

Note: You may already be using other viewers/players for your media (video, graphics, audio) files.  Some MIME types (file types) will be selected by default on the Mime Settings window. To avoid changing your existing file type associations (for other players/viewers you may be using), you will need to "de-select" these options as shown below.

First, de-select the "x" mark in the box next to each file type by clicking over the box once. When you are done  every box should be blank except for Video, which will retain a minus mark "-".   (This is because "QuickTime Movies" is one of the video file types listed for Video and this setting cannot be changed).  See graphic below.

Next, click the plus mark "+" next to Audio to expand the list of audio file types.  Select QualComm PureVoice audio file by clicking the box next to this file type (as shown below).   Reminder: These instructions only cover using QuickTime as a player for PureVoice files.  Selecting any of the other file types may result in QuickTime becoming the default player/viewer for those types of files.

Click OK.  Close the QuickTime Settings Box.

Opening and Playing PureVoice Files in QuickTime

Although the configuration instructions above will enable QuickTime to play PureVoice files, you may still receive an error message when attempting to open a  PureVoice attachment directly in WebTycho or from an email message.  If so, right-click on the PureVoice attachment in WebTycho or at the bottom of your email message and select Save from the mini-menu.  (Note: depending on your browser, the save options available may be "Save Target As", "Save File As", or "Save Link As".  Any of these options will enable you to save the PureVoice file to your hard drive).  When saving the file, be sure to select a folder location on your hard drive where you can easily locate the file.  You may need to use the navigational controls at the top of the "Save As" box to move to a different "Save in" location on your hard drive.

On the lower left side of the player window, make sure that the volume control is not turned all the way down (you may not be able to hear your PureVoice file if it is).

From the QuickTime File menu, select Open Movie in New Player.  The Open box will display.  By default, the "Files of type" field at the bottom of the Open box will say "Movies".  Before proceeding, you must use the Files of Type drop down box  to select "All Files".  Note:  Be sure that the "Show Preview" option at the bottom of the Open box is selected (as indicated by the check mark in front of this option).  If Show Preview is not selected, you will first have to convert the PureVoice file to QuickTime format (mov) before listening to it.  Selecting "Show Preview" eliminates the need to do this.

By default "Look in" field at the top of the Open box  will point to the QuickTime Folder.  It may be necessary to use the navigational controls at the top of the box to change the location specified in the  "Look in" field and locate the PureVoice file that you downloaded and saved to your hard drive.

Locate the PureVoice file. Click the file ONCE (do not double-click) on the file name to select it. A "play" icon and button will appear on the left side of the Open Box.   (If "Show Preview" is not selected, you will not see the Play button).

Click the Play button to listen to the file.

After you have listened to the file, click the stop button followed by the Cancel Button to close the "Open" box.
